What with Strange's wartime experiences already being an issue, not to mention whatever codependency issues they probably developed over a hundred years (one assumes for the sake of the story not ageing) together, I really want to see these two men returning to find England in the middle of a new and far more terrible war, made all the worse and more complicated by magicians on both sides. I would love to see this as an established relationship, and the only point of familiarity for them in the face of a world utterly changed.

I was thinking that Childermass wouldn't want to reveal to Mr Norrell that he can do magic, but he'd probably do it to save Mr Norrell if his was in danger. So maybe not everybody is happy about Mr Norrell bringing magic back, and somebody/group of somebodies try to harm him/kill him. Childermass knows he can't fight the lot of them so after a scuffle (maybe Childermass is a little hurt) he gets Mr Norrell to an dark alley and does his hiding in shadows thing, with Mr Norrell hidden between him and a wall. Norrell doesn't know how to handle anything that is going on. He's scared he's going to be hurt, annoyed that Childermas would hide this from him, and strangely overjoyed at the idea of there being another magician. [...]
