New Book Readers?

I read it before but I love seeing people's reactions to things as they go along so if you're just reading the book I'd love to see your predictions and discussions, idk it's interesting. It's been a while so I forgot a lot of stuff. Thinking about re-reading the book myself now.

Gentleman WtTH question...

Maybe book readers could answer this. Why is the gentleman with the thistledown hair able to just start appearing in the human world after Norrell summons him back? Basically before Norrell talked to him the second time, was he unable to travel between the worlds? And was he completely unable to come to the human world before Norell called him the first time?

I'm just wondering, if GWtTH was able to travel to human realm whenever he liked wouldn't he have been getting up to more mischief bc so far he's been pretty tame. Well other than kidnapping a couple of people.

As I understand it, the Gentleman could always come and go to the human realms as he wanted. He just... didn't want to, possibly for the same reason as English (and, presumably, human in general) magic had been functionally gone. Something like everyone is far too dull and ugly to bother with now. When Norrell summoned him, he gained a renewed interest and started to meddle again.

I don't know for sure, of course, but that's how I read it.

A Queastion on Grant

So it seems that Grant is very popular on the meme, paired with just about everyone (including Childermass.) I've only seen one episode of the show and I'm on page 448 of the book, and Grant didn't really make much of an impression on me at all. Is he more important on the show? Or particularly handsome? Or is it just that he made more of an impression on others than me?

I'm writing a fic, and there's a section written from Jonathan's POV where I want to make a passing reference to her quim. Would that term squick people out, do you think? I like the word, it's a bit archaic, but it's widely used here in England today, as it was in his time. Any strong views? Pussy seems twee, and vagina jyst doesn't sound much like Jonathan's style.

Cause I have a burning need to play some of the characters from this damn book. (Some of the more obscure and/or secondary ones, but still.) Once, many, many moons ago, I played in a game over on lj with some JS&MN characters on it. I would do unspeakable things to get the chance to do that again.

Changes From Book to Show

I've been watching the show and reading the book at the same time, and I've noticed some changes.

Some- like Jonathan's sand horses actually being dramatic and impressive, or Segundus not forgetting who Childermass is- I don't mind, but others I don't like as much. Like Norrell stealing Strange and Arabella's letters, for example- I'm almost offended on his behalf. It's so evil! Even if he is going to intercept their post, why not reseal it and send it on? Stopping them from having any contact at all just seems so mean-spirited!

And then there are ones that I'm not entirely sure about, like Jonathan talking to the trees in ep 3. It's interesting that they're trying to lay down the Raven King's alliances thing early, but at the same time it's such a fundamental change in the limits of magic compared to the book- he can't even move a forest, but in the book he moves an entire city (people and all) to America! And it's mostly treated as a sort of joke.

What do you think, meme? Do you like the changes? What else have you noticed?

Oh wow, I didn't realize that Norrell's letter hoarding wasn't book-canon! (I've only seen the series). While watching (and re-watching), that always bothered me for the same reasons. It just didn't seem to fit with the character; he couldn't be THAT mean!

Non-Con Strange: what's going on here?

Don't get me wrong, fellow memers: I ADORE non-con and dub-con stories about Strange. In fact, I love any stories were he's physically, emotionally or psychically stressed to breaking point, so I guess that also includes those heartbreakingly painful ones with Grant.

But recently, the sandwich!fic and the French soldiers!fic have had me in full-on squee overload. I'm not embarrassed about it, but I don't know why I find them so incredibly hot/exciting/poignant. The more realistic (pain, weeping, shit) and less theatrical (collars and BDSM) the better, but that's just my preference, and I fully embrace my fellow memers who love the theatrical stuff: I'm not judging! But why do I dig it? I just don't know.

In the fandom, Segundus and Drawlight seem to suffer the most, but Strange really gets worked over too.

So I'm asking the people like me who also LOVE this stuff: why do you love it? And why Strange?

As someone equally taken by the sandwich!fic and French soldiers!fic, I wish I could say why I love them so much but I don't really know. I also tend to prefer my fic a bit less theatrical, just because I find I have a harder time connecting to that and losing myself in the story.

When it comes to liking terrible things happening to characters I love, I've actually thought about this before. I always end up back at a documentary I watched once about women involved in the horror movie industry. They asked one participant why she loved horror so much and she said that she also loves romantic comedies, but since that wasn't considered outside the norm, no one would think to ask why she liked those.

For me, I always kind of end up at: you just like what you like. Though I'd love to know if other people can pin down their thoughts more succinctly than I can.

So is it just me or does the American bluray have like no special features? Are the deleted scenes only on the British one? Is someone out there willing to put them online somewhere? Or am I going to have to buy myself a regionless player and a new copy of the series? (I will do it if I have to. The lack of extras is some serious bullshit. I didn't drive an hour out of my way to pick it up on video just for my health.)

just FYI, there's a way to set your computer's DVD drive to a universal player, or at least change the region (you can change it back afterwards: I did this years ago on my old lap top when I accidentally bought Region 2 Doctor Who DVDs).

Try googling the results for a search like "change laptop dvd region code," etc. (or for desktop, if no lap top) -- hope this helps!

I love love love this fandom and am so glad I tracked it down after the end of the series when I was like, OMG WHAT DO I DO NOW.

I love that everyone is so excited whenever there's a new prompt.

I love that people chime in and add their thoughts and ideas.

I love that everyone is so friendly and happy even when there is TRAGIC HURT and COMFORT.

I love that ALL the fic is SO SO GOOD. It is so HYSTERICALLY FUNNY and WELL-WRITTEN and SO VERY HOT I THINK MY SCREEN MIGHT BURN OUT. It is the best fic in ANY fandom I have been involved in.

I love that we all know that Childermass is up for anyone and everything, Segundus is an total slut (even if he needs a bit of encouragement sometimes), and Norrell is just, so, Norrell about EVERYTHING.

What's the preferred way to post about a new update in a multi-part fill?

I've got an ongoing fill which I'm updating every couple of days. What's the etiquette here regarding the fills post? Do I make an update notification as a reply to my original comment on the fills post? Do I make a new comment on the fills post? Do I just stick the new part of the fill up under the old part and hope people remember to check?
What does everyone think is best?

I think replying to your original comment on the fills post is best, that's what I do, and yes just reply with a link to the latest part and people tracking the fills post will be able to see the update. I think that's a better method than creating a new "original post" on the fills post for every update, if you see what I mean! That would get confusing.

We're had nearly fifty new prompts in the space of 24 hours! It was quite a nice surprise to come home from work and to find so many inspiring new prompts have sprung up almost overnight.

Awkward Request for Advice

So I recently posted a prompt I was super excited about, and I immediately got a response, which made me really happy. Unfortunately, this response was someone asking for people to fill this prompt FOR THEM. I'm glad that someone else is interested in my prompt, but I feel sort of like they just hijacked a prompt I asked for, and have now completely claimed it as their own. I don't want to butt in and be mean, because I'm sure they meant no harm by it, but I've found it upsetting that this prompt I was so excited about no longer feels like it's my prompt.

Does anyone have any ideas how I might handle this, or is it best just to let the prompt go?

My dear anon, the exact same thing happened to me with a prompt I left. Not only did the person kind of "hijack" it as their own but also decided to completely turn my original prompt into something quite different from what I originally asked for (not to mention pretty much slating it for being slightly OOC). Seeing as the discussion has moved in kinda this direction - I've been a bit perturbed by the "do I have to write everything myself"-type comments. Not sure if these meet kinkmeme etiquette either. Some posters are not writers; some write very slowly; some have other commitments that mean they can't write as much as they would like. So the implied criticism makes me uncomfortable, even though I'm obviously glad for the fills all the same.

This has bothered me as well. I've posted several fills myself, but I'm busy and I write fairly slow, so it takes me a while to get a story to a state I view as postable. Add to that a propensity for writing longer fics, and it takes me a while. These sorts of comments make writing stressful rather than fun, and seem to dismiss all the stories I've already posted. Needless to say, I am not pleased by these implications.

Because there have been a few problems on the meme here in the last few days (probably necessary, and they seem to be resolving themselves quickly and with a minimum of drama), I thought it might be a good idea to post a discussion thread allowing everyone to say things they've been enjoying about the meme so far. Anything from story recommendations, to great replies you got on a story, to that one prompt you thought was genius. Or just general happiness!

I'll start: I've personally loved seeing all the historical prompts (I have such a weakness for that sort of thing), and the WWI Strange/Norrell series that spawned from this thread (https://jsmn-kinkmeme.dreamwidth.org/1273.html?thread=64505#cmt64505) has been utterly delightful. I've also loved seeing how much enthusiasm everyone has for other peoples' prompts, even the ones that don't get filled. Even when a prompt I've written doesn't get filled, it's so nice to hear other people expressing their interest in it!

This place is not just about prompting and filling, it's become a place where we can go and tell other people what we like about JS&MN, and realize that there are others who also like it!

What I've enjoyed most so far about the meme is how it has turned me into a complete multishipper! I came here with the intention of only reading Norrell/Childermass fan fic, only to find myself thinking, oh go on.. one Lascelles/Childermass or Strange/Grant or Childermass/Segundus etc. etc. etc. won't hurt. Now I'm shipping everything and reading everything I can get my grubby hands on!

Many of the fan fics here were the turning points for me falling head over heels into shipper heaven and I'd like to thank the wonderful authors for doing so! The book didn't convince me to ship it. The show didn't convince me to ship it. But the fan fic did!

I think all the fillers should give themselves a round of applause.

Not that you necessarily need to feel oh-no about it. I am vexed at my own predictability+the fact that he's not even meant to be one of the pretty ones. I feel like I'm not supposed to be quite this level of into him, oops. But I'm sure it's not just me, the nature of fandom being what it is.

ANYWAY what is it about him? Is it the bookishness? Eddie Marsan's lovely squishable cheeks? (Can't be that exclusively for me, because book!Norrell is where it began, but could definitely be a contributing factor.)

Talk to me about your crush on Norrell! Or talk to me about the jsmn character you're half annoyed at the degree of attraction you feel for. Whatever really.

I devoured three episodes of the show and only then I start to read a book (because I just cant wait another week!), so it started with TV!Norrell and increased with book!Norrell so terribly indecisive and so sweetly Strange-dependent.
I think I just manage to fall in love within three episodes where he still a sinnamon roll, because later... well, later TV!Norrell is actually a dick (I mean more than a book!Norrell), but oops, it's too late, i'm in love with this selfish sociophobic bookworm :)

Kinkmeme Etiquette Question

This is my first time participating in a kinkmeme, so I'm not familiar with what is considered bad form, and I didn't see my question mentioned in the Rules and Guidelines section, so...

I put in a prompt in Round One that gained some interest but (alas) not a fill. It was on Page 16, so I'm worried it just got buried. Can I resubmit the prompt for Round Two, or is that being rude?

Alas, this is generally not done. Please be assured, though, that a lot of people are digging through the backlog (especially since the prompt freeze let us all catch up), looking for prompts to fill, so just because your prompt is back on the last round doesn't mean it won't get filled. It's just luck of the draw, really. Some prompts generate enthusiasm, but don't spark an author to sit down at their keyboard and actually fill it. Some do. Some spark enthusiasm, things die down, and then out of the blue several weeks later someone does fill it. And because it's that unpredictable (and sometimes that delayed!), reposting prompts isn't done.

But if you have other prompts you want that you haven't yet posted, by all means do post them! And who knows? Someone might be working on your old prompt as we speak.
