Our Gilbert, early in the Pillar of Darkness, does something that really pisses off Jonathan (can someone think up what that could have been?) Reacting with his typical aplomb and directness (ie none at all), he decides that the best thing for them is not to be together, so that he doesn't irritate Strange, and, after all, he himself was always best off alone in his library...wasn't he? So he does a spell.

Now they are magically separated, so they are living parallel lives in the same place. Sometimes they see evidence that the other is still there: a still-warm cup of tea, as though the other has just left it, etc.

After a bit, they can magically have brief conversations in dreams, which at least makes it clear what happened. Mr Norrell is awfully sorry, and upset. He is also horribly lonely, and barely consciously aware of that.

Eventually they get back together, and Norrell keeps on stealthily holding Strange's hand and trying to get close to him, because what if he vanishes again.

Smut v welcome but fluff also delightful--no tragedy plz! At least as much emphasis on the eventual comfort as the hurt!

+1 Norrell has difficulty figuring out why he's unhappy.
+1 Jonathan takes a much shorter time to figure out what happened than to work out why.
+1 Back together, at first Jonathan has to tell him to let go to give him a chance to get dressed/go to the privy/make tea etc.
+1 Back together, Norrell needs to sleep next to Jonathan.
