Re: so is this an appropriate place for an 'oh no I'm attracted to Norrell' club

I'm also disgusted with myself over my stupid crush on show!Lascelles. He's so ridiculously pretty. Urgh. I hate him.

To get back to OP's topic though, I also find myself a little hot under the collar when I see Norrell in his shirtsleeves. The scene where he's reading by the fire and talking to Childermass has me sitting in a puddle.

I have the utmost sympathy for people crushing on show!Lascelles. I have fortunately managed to avoid it myself but every time I see John Heffernan in profile I'm like 'dangit, stop that', because he really is incredibly pretty.

Also YES on the shirtsleeves. That is such a good scene. Coatless, with spectacles on, and then the wiggling in his chair a bit when he sits down which is so cute, aaaah.

(also okay so. You know that scene in the first episode after his stone magic where he kind of collapses backwards into a chair? That scene does things to me that I do not fully understand and I'm annoyed about it. WHY, HONESTLY.)

I always think it's interesting how they change his character in the show, because I feel like he's both more sympathetic in some ways and more, well, of a dick, like you say. I guess it's in the interest of putting a stronger redemption arc in, maybe? idk! But yep, agreed.

Re: so is this an appropriate place for an 'oh no I'm attracted to Norrell' club

They put a little more drama in the show (because of screen time limitation and because of tv genre), so characters changed quite differently. Stephen, the most, and Jonathan/Bell dynamics are not so bookish. And Norrell - he is more sensitive, all that laugh and smiles and tears and emotions, but he is much more creepy (remember Drawlight in gaol) and cruelly senseless (stolen letters, ignoring pleas for help from Jonathan).
And so you start to criticize him more, because in the book you don't expect from Norrell neither emotional involvement, not strong will. And because TV!Norrell own both and don't use them for good... I just had an urge to shake him and shout "what are doing, you could be so much better!"
Sorry. I just waited for this conversation too long -____-

(Oh my God me too anon!! He's like, exhausted from UNLEASHING HIS POWERS but then he smiles and just looks so sated and it's SO HOT!!!!(?)!! and he throws himself back into that chair too, or is thrown back by the sheer energy of it (himself, his magic). It's so erotic. The puddle returns.)

Anon from above again hello I FORGOT TO ADD:

Am I the only one who finds Norrell hot when he SPITS on the floor after Vinculus has touched him?? Please say I'm not.

No need to apologize! This is a great summary. I really like how you put it. It's definitely true - in the series, Norrell has skills that he doesn't in the book, but then doesn't use them, which is totally different from not having them and not using them as in the book. Great point.

not just you, TOTALLY SAME. Frankly I'm inexplicably squiggly about anyone getting up into Norrell's personal space (the bit where he's all splayed back against a table while the Gentleman leans over him?) and then he does the spitting thing and it's weirdly hot, yeah. Again, I can't explain it but it's definitely there.

Also thank you for that excellent, excellent summation in the post above. *_*

I very much understand, he's a wee cutie.

My crush really developed from the last episode tbh, when his wig gets increasingly untidy and he's all flustered. And when he's cradling sickly Jonathan's head in his lap, oh god. He's just so CUTE.

Personally I think one of the best things about this meme in general is there doesn't seem to be any kind of superiority complex or hostility concerning those who have read the book vs those who have only seen the show, or those who've been in the fandom for years vs those who have only just discovered it because of the show. I'd never heard of JSAMN until watching the show (I've now read the book too) and I've never once gotten the impression from anyone on the meme or in the fandom in general that this was a bad thing or that I was. In anyway less of a fan because of it- which is something that definitely can't be said for a lot of other fandoms where a "book fans vs tv/film fans" hierarchy is very much in place.
Everyone on this meme just seems to love the world and characters of jsamn and, while many book-first fans may criticise or critically discuss aspects of the show (more on tumblr than here), no one (that I've seen) is shamed or criticised for preferring to write show!characterisation or show!canon instead of book!canon and that just makes such a refreshing change.

Kinkmeme Etiquette Question

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
This is my first time participating in a kinkmeme, so I'm not familiar with what is considered bad form, and I didn't see my question mentioned in the Rules and Guidelines section, so...

I put in a prompt in Round One that gained some interest but (alas) not a fill. It was on Page 16, so I'm worried it just got buried. Can I resubmit the prompt for Round Two, or is that being rude?

You're not alone with your crush on Lascelles. I didn't pay too much attention to him at first (too distracted by the story and Jonathan Strange/Bertie Carvel tbh). But I have an incurable villain fetish, so when Lascelles began to truly let his inner asshole shine through...yeah, I don't know why I was so surprised to find myself attracted to him.

Re: Kinkmeme Etiquette Question

Alas, this is generally not done. Please be assured, though, that a lot of people are digging through the backlog (especially since the prompt freeze let us all catch up), looking for prompts to fill, so just because your prompt is back on the last round doesn't mean it won't get filled. It's just luck of the draw, really. Some prompts generate enthusiasm, but don't spark an author to sit down at their keyboard and actually fill it. Some do. Some spark enthusiasm, things die down, and then out of the blue several weeks later someone does fill it. And because it's that unpredictable (and sometimes that delayed!), reposting prompts isn't done.

But if you have other prompts you want that you haven't yet posted, by all means do post them! And who knows? Someone might be working on your old prompt as we speak.

Not OP here, but I think this is where I went wrong too anon. He started being rude to Childermass and I was suddenly like... interesting. And then obviously the scene with the knife which is basically pornography (especially Lascelles shouting "apologise" and his voice going all deep and echoing around the library.) I didn't WANT to fancy him, but... I really REALLY do. We need an anonymous helpline or something, this is bad.

Thank you for letting me know! You've stopped me from committing a kinkmeme faux-pax. Here's hoping someone fills my trashy little prompt!

Re: Kinkmeme Etiquette Question

I've seen kinkmemes in the past where things like forgotten prompt posts were made, where people could re-prompt an old prompts they were particularly attached to and hadn't gotten any love. Those were mostly in bigger fandoms so I don't know whether something like that might work here, but it's worth keeping in mind.
(Also, as a very slow-moving writer, I have a word doc full of old prompts from further back in the km which I am slowly but surely getting around to filling... here's hoping your prompt is on the to-do list of me or somebody else, and you get a fill eventually :D

Someone asked in the mod post if they could repost their prompt in the next round and the mod was okay with it so I don't see the harm? I think it's a problem if someone keeps re-posting their prompt in the same round over and over, but if you've waited for a new round it should be okay imo

Re: Kinkmeme Etiquette Question

(Anonymous) 2015-08-31 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think this was actually the mod asking the prompter if they'd like to repost their prompt because their previous one got hijacked.

I would suggest asking in the mod post so the mod can explain, as we're all pretty much guessing here and perhaps the guidelines will be updated so others won't be confused.

Re: Kinkmeme Etiquette Question

(Anonymous) 2015-09-01 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I did, and the mod just said they'd prefer people not to repost prompts from one round to another.

Anyone else completely, hopelessly addicted to this kinkmeme? I think I need to go into some kind of rehab.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-12 12:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. If I'm free I'm always checking for new comments. I blame our lovely and talented authors and the creative prompters.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-13 10:27 am (UTC)(link)
Phew. So glad it's not just me. There's some stuff on here that makes me do a little dance of joy whenever I see it has been updated. And sooooo many awesome, clever prompts.

(Anonymous) 2015-09-14 07:36 am (UTC)(link)
Oh my, yes! Addicted and quite hopelessly so. I check it as soon as I wake up in the morning and throughout the day and then read any new fills before bed (if none then I check the AO3 tag for new fics.) It's so addicting!

Definitely my main draw--I love flawed characters and characters who are possibly on the autism spectrum, much more than I love "noble" or "worthy" characters. I have a great soft spot for characters who don't deserve to be loved but are anyway (don't we all sometimes want more than we deserve). And I have a major kink for getting prim-and-proper characters...despoiled. I also often don't like being pushed by the author in who to like or dislike, so I write against that.

That's the way I felt from the book--but Eddie M. being frankly damn cute and bringing out all the character's fussiness and vulnerability probably kicked this into being a major fandom for me.

So there I am, glad there are a few other outliers here.

I quite like Childermass, but he's not my favourite character--there's my 'outlier' status, if you like.

Since discovering this kinkmeme/fandom, I've begun to develop "fanfiction headaches" from reading too much fanfic! I swear it's a thing!
