I know there’s no canon interaction between them as per the show, but I can really see them being attracted to each other. Perhaps Grant and Arabella team up to get Jonathan back, Childermass helps them, and quietly starts to fall for Grant, who in turn starts to see beneath the Childermass surly facade to the goodness beneath. Maybe his cards told Childermass long ago that he would give his heart to a red coat. Or Vinculus could notice his attraction and mock him for it. Anything, I will take anything.

I ended up with this part of the prompt:
3) Expert Trash Mode: Norrell does a spell to split Childermass into two people. Unfortunately what he gets -- as becomes more obvious over time -- are two people who are two different partial Childermasses -- one that is patient, reactive, introverted, but quietly protective of Norrell, and one that is proactive, motivated, long-standingly fed up with Norrell and kind of wants to take him over his knee/otherwise debauchedly lose his patience with him. Good!Childermass, Naughty!Childermass, and all kinds of things Norrell finds very confusing.

Prompt: On the return journey from the Peninsular to England, a storm hits the ship that Grant and Strange (and any other Peninsular characters, if you like) are travelling in. Closely confined, seasick, frightened: give me the experiences of these landlubbers in the alien environment of a ship of Nelson's navy. Hurt-comfort, vomiting (or worse), a gropey ship's doctor, injuries from being thrown around or tripping over below decks, the awful food, the smell, the hundreds of burly sailors, who are notoriously superstitious... Both of them are trying to be polite and decorous—and both of them miss the ones they left behind them (Norrell trying not to think about Childermass, and Strange trying not to think about his wife)—and both of them are getting more-than-a-bit interested in each other, while thinking this is obviously a Really Bad Idea.

Cue lots of embarrassment and excuses and trying to keep their paws off each other, and both of them are feeling just a bit narked because they really ought to not do anything, but the other one isn’t making this easy, being all over them like that.
