Childermass/Norrell, emotional hurt/comfort
(Anonymous) 2015-08-20 05:46 am (UTC)(link)Norrell is haunted by something he feels ashamed about, and he can't keep it to himself any longer. Either an AU where he actually tells Childermass about what he did to Lady Pole, or something of your own invention - I'd prefer it be something he did not that was done to him.
And Childermass of course makes it better - not downplaying that it was bad, but it can still be lived through, it's not something that should be an albatross.
Could be Strange/Norrell if that's your ship.

"If you tell it me, maybe I can help," said Childermass, leaning over Norrell's desk. Norrell looked up at him, then back down. He fidgeted with the letters in his hand, and took a deep breath.
"When I brought Lady Pole back to life," he said carefully. "I summoned a fairy."
Childermass watched him implacably. "I take it that was not the end of it," he said.
"No. The fairy - the fairy cheated me," said Norrell, twisting the letter.
"How so?"
"I said - I said I would give half her lifetime if she would be brought back to life. Half a life is better than none." Norrell echoed the fairy's words without entirely realizing he was doing so. "And I thought - well, I thought she would only die earlier than she might have otherwise."
"But that is not what happened."
"No." Norrell's mouth twisted. "I am given to understand that he takes her nightly to dance at his - oh, I do not know what he does with her. It is something to do with her dreams. I believe he is in her dreams somehow and is driving her mad, ever since a little while after I brought her back. I do not know how to make him stop."
Childermass was silent for a little while, and Norrell gazed down at his own hands, guilt and anger at himself twisting up horribly in his stomach. He felt hot with shame.
Then Childermass walked around to the other side of the desk and crouched in front of Norrell, who deliberately avoided his gaze.
"Sir," said Childermass, his voice low and calm and soothing to Norrell's ears.
"It was a foolish thing to have done, I know," said Norrell, and he could not keep the bitterness out of his voice. "I was so sure - so sure that there would be another opportunity. That this would be the only way to bring English magic back to respectability. But it is the most unrespectable thing I have ever done." He closed his eyes for a moment.
"It was not wise," Childermass acknowledged. "And you should have told someone before."
"I know," said Norrell, twisting the letter some more - it was becoming quite wrinkled with the extremes of his emotion. "I know. But I was so afraid - " He stopt.
"What were you afraid of?" said Childermass. His hand was on the arm of Norrell's chair and Norrell wanted to reach out and clutch it, but did not wish to risk rejection.
"That I would be counted as a failure and denounced," he said. "That I would never be able to find another way to restore the status of magic. That people would say I was a charlatan." Norrell made a sound of disgust. "All my life I have dealt with allusions to yellow-curtained tents, Childermass, and I did not wish to have that flung in my face again."
Childermass was silent again for a few moments. Then he sighed, and reached out for Norrell's hand. Norrell started at the contact and then laced his fingers with Childermass's, very tightly.
Childermass said, "What you did was wrong, sir. Not because you brought the lady back to life, but because you did not tell anyone of her peril."
Norrell squeezed his eyes shut and said, "I know." He moved to withdraw his hand from Childermass's, but Childermass gently tugged it back.
"You have done wrong," continued Childermass, "But it is not irreparable. We can fix it."
Norrell opened his eyes and looked at Childermass's face fully for the first time since the conversation had taken this turn.
"The first thing to do is to allow Mrs Strange's letters to go through," continued Childermass. "Because what they reveal will no longer be a secret. We are going to tell Sir Walter."
Norrell opened his mouth to protest, but Childermass continued. "He values honesty. If you confess your mistake and explain that you are working to cure it, he will respect you more, not less. Further, you will give him a cause for his wife's malady, and that will ease his mind. I am sure he will be discreet - your failure need not be broadcast to the public."
Norrell nodded miserably. "It will be as you say," he whispered.
"And when Mr Strange returns, we will tell him," said Childermass.
This hit Norrell like a blow. He crumpled under the thought of it, of what Strange might say. "I respect Mr Strange's good opinion a great deal," he said, gazing at the letter in his hand. "What will he think of me?"
"He will think you are being truthful with him, which will work in your favor, just as it will for Sir Walter. In any case he will understand your justification for disliking fairy-servants now."
"But supposing he is scornful of my mistakes. Supposing he laughs. I could not bear that." Norrell stroked a thumb along Childermass's hand. "I could not."
"I know," said Childermass in a low murmur. "But I do not think that Mr Strange will laugh at you. He is not that sort of man. He will help you and you may be able to find a way to free the lady from her enchantment with his aid."
Norrell found that there were tears in his eyes, to his great shame. Childermass rose on his knees and wiped them away, a tender gesture that made Norrell shudder all over. It made him feel as though perhaps tehre was hope after all, if Childermass was there to help him.
As if he could see this, Childermass kissed his forehead and whispered, "This is not the end of anything."
Norrell made a noise that was halfway between a sigh and a quiet exclamation of pain, and leaned forward to bury his face in Childermass's shoulder. He shook a little as Childermass stroked his head.
After a moment Childermass said, "It is not that I mind petting you, but perhaps we might move somewhere easier for my knees."
Norrell huffed something that was not quite a laugh and then sat up.
"Come, sir," said Childermass. "I shall put you to bed."
"Would you - stay with me?" asked Norrell.
Childermass looked at him for a moment. "Yes," he said. "I will, tonight." He leaned over and kissed Norrell, and Norrell breathed in the knowledge that tomorrow would bring an end to the worry he had been wrestling with for so long. Perhaps there would be new worries, but Childermass would be there, and he would help him, now that he knew.
He had the oddest sense that things were going to be all right.

(Anonymous) 2015-08-20 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)When I watched the TV series (I hadn't read the book at that point) I spent a lot of the series shouting "TELL HIM!!!", so this fic has soothed those frustrations somewhat :)
