Re: Recent issues with prompt-hijacking, criticism, and spamming

I've seen some great discussion on this meme, on relatively small prompts, where many suggestions and scenarios have been added to complement it beautifully.

For example, the Grant/Strange uniform kink prompt (page 18) started as something relatively small and expanded wonderfully in the replies. It's actually a brilliant example prompt to use for three reasons:
1. the OP was fully involved in the discussion,
2. while many thoughts and ideas were added, they were all on-topic to the prompt itself, and
3. it got a fill that was based upon the discussion rather than the prompt (something the filler mentioned) but as the discussion was so to the point of the initial prompt it still worked and the OP was happy.

Hijacking this prompt would have been something like: "I really can't see this happening. It would be better if it was actually Strange wearing Grant's uniform because Strange sees Grant in his uniform all the time and would be immune to its charms - somebody should write this instead!" That's completely changing the prompt and also criticizing it - the whole frowned-upon shebang! That sort of thing should go in a new separate prompt.

It's tricky to pin down exactly (although I've very rarely seen hijacking on this meme and don't think anyone should worry too much) and I'm sure the mods will do a better job explaining it than I have here, but as long as your ideas and suggestions fit the prompt and are respectful to the OP, they will hopefully be appreciated by them.

^ this.

Only thing to add is maybe it can be hard for prompters to say no if they don't really want a discussion under their prompt or don't want people adding stuff. Like they don't want to seem to be spoiling everyone's fun? But in that case the discussion can just move to the discussion post and maybe if the OP doesn't want to shut it down they could ask a mod to step in and direct a sprawling back and forth thread to the discussion post instead of under the person's prompt? idk.

I don't think hijacking has really been a problem here before. Because we're such a small fandom comparatively it's nice to allow discussion under prompts (as long as the OP is okay with it and participating) because I feel like if the mods stepped in every time people tried adding stuff to prompts it would seriously kill the fun discussions that have been happening.

I for one am always utterly thrilled if my prompts create a discussion. Sometimes it's where I find the fun in a kinkmeme! I personally wouldn't be offended if somebody put that they'd prefer their prompt not be expanded on in the comments - but I doubt anyone would want to actively dismiss discussion of their prompt-baby? Maybe it's just me?

I also agree that with the fandom being the size it is, interacting with fellow fans has always seemed like a charming addition to the meme rather than an annoyance. We're a friendly/respectful bunch.

Besides, the "no hijacking" rule has always been in place and so far it's been pretty respected, this prompt freeze is just a reminder that the rule exists.

The uniform kink discussion is a thing of beauty.

I think OPs should be quite at liberty to say if they disagree with a suggested promot addition. Would hate to lose the fabulous duscussions here.

Oh certainly. The lovelies frequenting this meme should feel confident to say if they disagree with an addition to their prompt. Surely it's better to politely add "thanks for this, but it;s not to OP's taste :(" than sit back and watch your prompt turn into something you're unhappy with, or having a mod shut it down? Of course, both options are entirely valid, it's all about what people are comfortable doing.

I don't think anything's gonna drastically change here re: the reminder of the rule. Discussion isn't going to stop (I hope!). Memers are just going to have more awareness that changing a prompt too drastically is inappropriate, unless the OP has specifically asked for changes.

Looking forward to hearing what the mod has to say on the subject!
