When he was quite clean, and clad in a clean white shirt, he sat down at the edge of his bed. In the morning, he thought, he would rise as normal at dawn, and put on his uniform, and be very neat and crisp, and nothing at all would have changed. That was how small the hurt was.

He had been contemplating this idea for a very long time when he heard someone clear his throat uncomfortably.

Startled, Grant looked up.

Strange was standing just inside the tent. His hair was damp; he had obviously washed, and was in a clean shirt and breeches, but with all that, he still looked— well. He looked like a man who had passed the evening in the fashion he had passed it. And he looked rather nervous to be standing where he was. (In bare feet, Grant noticed, and felt a pang. He should not feel such fondness for Strange's bare feet.)

"You left," Strange said.

Grant said, "...Yes. I was intended to."

"But I did not want you to leave."

Grant surprised himself with a laugh. It was a very bitter laugh. "Very little of what has just taken place was about you, you will find. Or— in an indirect way."

Strange said, "Regardless, I think you will find that I was still the one who... " His voice failed him. He swallowed hard.

They did not look at one another for a moment.

"So," Strange said at last, "I suppose I did not really wish to sleep alone. But I have made a mistake. I will go."

Grant felt again that terrible tension in his breastbone. He did not think he could bear it. It felt like a bullet wound straight above the heart. "No," he managed. And then, more loudly, "No. No."

Strange took a very uncertain step towards him and stopped.

Grant held out his hand.

All in a rush, it seemed, Strange was pushing him down onto the bed, kissing him rather frantically, in a haphazard and shaky fashion. Eventually Grant got his arms wrapped around him and held him close and almost ferociously, burying his face against Strange's shoulder. He did not think he would ever let go.

"Stay here," he murmured to Strange. "Sleep here. I will take care of you."

"I know," Strange said.

Sheer fucking perfection, start to finish. You are precisely my sort of trash, anon.

Wow. That was perfection. I love this pairing, and I love how much character you gave the participants. Just. Perfection.

Thank you, A!A. I have been waiting for De Lancey's debut and oh, what a way to get it. But really, the Grant/Strange feels are what made this. Particularly loved Grant chastising himself for being fond of Strange's feet. And also massive kudos for Wellington - his voice and actions were on point.

Weird – that’s exactly what happened to me while I was reading this ASTONISHING FIC. I knew the prompt was in safe hands by the end of the second paragraph, but I didn’t dare hope you would take things as far as you did. You beautiful, unashamed, talented. Grant’s internal monologue was perfect, his care for Strange was so poignant, I loved the De Lancey/Wellington thing, and Strange was just so sweet. Poor Jonathan, poor Grant, and Wellington, you dirty bastard, you know you’ll be jacking off to this in that camp bed later.

You have created an instant classic. I am amazed at the skill with which you walk the tightrope between guilt and desire. In the words of Hannibal Lecter, it must be quite something to know you in private life.

I read this on the train this morning and I am now halfway through the most unproductive day at work I've ever had. I am basically unable to function. IS THIS WHAT YOU WANTED ANON??????

I thought it was just me. I have been staring at the same spreadsheet for 2 hours. All I can think about is Grant's angry, guilty, tender fucking, and Strange's beautiful hands clutched in the sheet. Hold on, I just have to go back and read it again...

It's definitely not just you, I'm sewing a dress and just finished stitching the skirt on backwards. I can only blame how distracted I am by the hotness of this fic.

Grant tightrope walking between loving Jonathan and desiring him... De Lancey's secret boner for Wellington... Jonathan's latent fragility and sweetness... Wellington sheer Wellington-ness... this is all I ever wanted and and I am indeed now the happiest person in the universe!! Thank you so much A!A!!!! :)))

Oh man I want a sequel to this, even though I don't know what it would be...

I am beyond speech.
This was the most hot, mindblowing and bittersweet fic I've ever read.
Oh those emotions. The fiery jealousy, the cold power play, and being helplessly lost in pleasure.
Oh the tiny details - like Strange kissing Grant's hand or Grant walking to his tent in unclasped boots or that piece about Brussels.........

I guess there's no point in being mad at Wellington and De Lancey, they were not purposefully mean or cruel. But all I want after this ordeal is that Strange and Grant, the two angels that they are, could hug each other and never let go. Just like you wrote it. It was a perfect ending. Thank you. Thank you.

I can’t stop thinking about one thing though.
I think Strange’s resolved and rather calm demeanor was just a defense mechanism. Because you know, the whole scene had more than a little rape-y feeling about it.
And I imagine, after Strange felt he was at last safe, somewhere after “Stay here, sleep here”, the defense cracked and he probably burst into tears.

This is sad and hot and incredible. You are shockingly talented, A!A, you know that, right?

Well. This is the first Strange/Grant I've ever delved into and wow, I'm now a shipper. This was so amazingly well written I felt I was almost there in the tent, watching from Wellington's creeper desk in the corner. Grant's jealousy was so heartfelt and I am so pleased they got a happy ending. Thank you for such an amazing fill!
