(frozen comment) Has someone cast a spell on the kinkmeme?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-20 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
We're had nearly fifty new prompts in the space of 24 hours! It was quite a nice surprise to come home from work and to find so many inspiring new prompts have sprung up almost overnight.

I think (I could be wrong) that someone is on a mission to post a prompt for every character that appears in the novel. :D

Am I the only one finding it... really annoying?

Not the person you replied to, but no, you're not. I use flatview, and scrolling back past all the incessant prompts to find fills and discussion is making me grind my teeth...

Oh dear, I can't imagine how difficult it must make flat viewing.

OP here. I found it charming initially, but as the posts keep on coming* and the characters involved have gotten more and more obscure with each prompt, I'm starting to find it a little ... overwhelming? Don't get me wrong, it's great that people are interested in the kinkmeme, but there are just so. many. new. prompts! I almost don't know where to focus...

*We are up to 66 new prompts now as I write this. From the wording and format, I would guess that the majority originate from one poster only.

I feel a tad guilty for my earlier comment, but --66-- prompts? I remember the first time I ventured into a kink meme (for an insanely large fandom) and found there to be a very prominent culture of filling as much as you prompt - a give-to-receive sort of thing. If that were the case for this prompter I would of course be --thrilled-- but I highly doubt it!

I read the book quite recently and even with it so fresh in my mind I'm having difficulty remembering all these people. I think I would need to search through footnotes to find some of them!

I have a prompt idea myself but the fear of it being washed away by this tidal wave of prompts has me keeping hold of it until a later date!

I'm annoyed insofar as I recently posted a prompt (my first/only) which I was really excited about, and shortly thereafter returned to find it lost behind several pages of new prompts /:

This exact same thing happened to me!

If reposting prompts wasn't extremely frowned upon I'd totally do it.

honestly the prompts read like a troll. except for the ladies of grace adieu prompts the rest are just like ????????? but i guess ymmv

i know some other kink memes have moratorium periods for new prompts so everyone could look through and fill the existing ones and i think this meme should try it?

(frozen comment) Re: Has someone cast a spell on the kinkmeme?

I get the impression someone just wants to show off their book knowledge. Which is sad, really, as I bet most if not all of us here gave read it too.

Whatever the motivation, someone is coming across rather entitled, and if I'm honest, they have succeeded in putting me off writing for any of their prompts.

(frozen comment) Re: Has someone cast a spell on the kinkmeme?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
I thought the same. At first (when only 10 or so similarly worded prompts had been posted) I thought they were not very subtly trying to prompt something they'd already written so they had an excuse to quickly post it on the meme, disguising it within a cloud of newer prompts. But then they just kept coming...

They also don't seem to have any inclination to tag spoilers. Most of their prompts are a couple of words and make little sense to non-book readers when isolated, but one in particular (Lascelles' book ending) had me rushing to my phone to text a friend who is currently reading and has yet to reach that chapter. (I don't know for certain it was the same prompter, but it seems likely.) *sigh*

I'm unsure about moratorium periods. While they are very handy for massive fandoms, before this prompter came along and overflowed three pages in two days this meme never seemed too much to handle (imho). It seemed to fluctuate from a couple to a handful of prompts per day and it was a real joy to refresh and find the new ones.

Also, has the person who made this kinkmeme been kidnapped by a fairy? The Tumblr page (which used to make some handy fill round-ups) rarely posts anything anymore (the last round up at time of writing is 6.5 weeks ago), so I doubt they would have time to initiate moratorium posts. Obviously I am completely understanding of the fact that people have lives (and so very very grateful that they made this brilliant meme in the first place), but there are so many willing to help with this meme! The Tumblr tag has been alive with discussion about how to catalog the fills, starting a new blog just for this meme's fic etc.

Anyway, I've become sidetracked and written you an essay. Hopefully the prompter-troll will desist soon!

How can I find discussion relating to this meme on Tumblr? (not a Tumblr user atm, could never get my head around it).

Finding the prompt-flood a bit frustrating tbh - telling myself it is an over-excited n00b rather than a troll, because it would make me sad to think of my current Happy Place being trolled...

(frozen comment) Re: Has someone cast a spell on the kinkmeme?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-21 03:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd like to think the same thing. Surely a troll wouldn't be so.. particular?

I don't think there is anywhere on Tumblr specificly for talking about this meme. This page is the only place I'm aware of to discuss the meme itself. Specific users have made posts about wanting to help out or discussing their own fills or prompts, but as far as I'm aware there isn't a place solely for discussing the meme.

ayrt hopefully you're right and theyre just overeager. and yeah, point taken-- the actual logistics of imposing a moratorium seem p unlikely and the meme is relatively small. I guess i'm just a little worried that the disparity between filled and unfilled prompts is getting bigger ?? I NEED TO GET OFF MY BUTT AND WRITE MORE

(frozen comment) Re: Has someone cast a spell on the kinkmeme?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-22 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
If a moratorium period was put in place, do you think people would go back through all the pages to look for things to fill? Perhaps it could be worth mentioning to the mods?

(frozen comment) Re: Has someone cast a spell on the kinkmeme?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-22 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not the person you were talking to, but during one of the serial prompter's, uh episodes, I kind of snapped and asked the mod if we could have a prompt freeze. They replied saying they were thinking of having one around 4000 comments. We're currently at 3930, so at this rate we may well have one in the next day or two (or if Prompty McPrompter rears their head again, this evening...)

I think it might be a good thing and encourage more fills - this seems to have been the case in past kinkmemes that I have taken part in. I suppose we'll have to see how it goes.

New to this meme, but I gotta say, I find the discussion above very weird. Never saw anything like that on other memes I've followed. It seems kinda passive-aggressive to try to police the way someone is enjoying fandom. It's not like people OWE each other fills on the meme! Something's not your thing, scroll down. Everyone's having fun their own way.

(frozen comment) Re: Has someone cast a spell on the kinkmeme?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 10:31 am (UTC)(link)
I can completely see where you're coming from anon. People certainly don't owe fills and a lot of people can't actually write them. I think the regulars are just upset that the gradual pace of prompts was so suddenly bombarded so the more detailed prompts, or prompts featuring characters who aren't so obscure, were buried under pages and pages of new prompts.

(frozen comment) Re: Has someone cast a spell on the kinkmeme?

(Anonymous) 2015-08-23 10:53 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, anon, that's just what weirded me out. Other memes have way more prompt posts AND more prompts without people getting grumpy about it. Like I said, just scroll. Anon memes are a massive outlet for people who can't really engage in fandom for some reason, and this booing 'cause someone is fannish in a different way doesn't seem inclusive at all. :( I just don't get the fuss over many prompts on a prompt meme!

(frozen comment) Re: Has someone cast a spell on the kinkmeme?

I really do see your point anon, it is a very good one and I can completely see where you're coming from (it's quite eye-opening in a way.)

Personally I am honestly pleased that this prompter has found somewhere to engage in the fandom. However, taking your point on board (that this is a prompt meme, so why would we get upset over prompts?) their prompts don't really follow the guidelines so come across like spamming/trolling. We don't want the prompter's enthusiasm criticized, just that their prompts seem more like.. prompts! and less like spam.

This is from the guidelines:
"Different ideas can call for different levels of detail, but try to put yourself in a potential filler's shoes when posting your prompt. Consider if your idea might be too long and restrictive for anyone to satisfy properly, or if it might be too short and vague for anyone to draw proper inspiration from it."

Five, ten, fifteen prompts in a row that read something like

TITLE: character/character
BODY: ANYTHING!

are not helpful at all to potential fillers. When in such a huge number, these short prompts may end up upsetting those who put a lot of thought into their prompt idea.

I may be mistaken, but I think that's the general thought above. The prompter is just prompting prompting prompting seemingly without care. Yes of course, scrolling past is certainly a reasonable expectation, but when scrolling past resulted in.. just more and more of these prompts, it became a little frustrating and resulted in venting. The meme is such a lovely friendly place, I hope that seeing this conversation so early in your time here (welcome, by the way) will not put you off getting involved.

The prompter in question seems to have lost steam now and the meme mod has recently announced they will be reminding users of the no spamming rule within the next prompt post, so hopefully all this will be resolved. I apologise for writing you an essay!

Prompts are always a good thing, but surely you can see how frustrating it must be to come back to the meme an hour after posting your own beloved prompt that you've thought long and hard about to find three new pages filled with 57 variations on "M. Forcalquier/The Pole's footman: Minor character misadventure shenanigans."

It's flooding, it's greedy and comments and seconds on prompts have noticeably reduced since this person started their spamming campaign.

The lack of activity on the meme since this started happening has really bothered me too. Looks like it has put a lot of people off, sadly.

Here's to the next prompt post putting all of this behind us *raises glass*
